Becoming a climate change messenger with Al Gore – an update

Unrelenting passion and a strong desire to spread the word about dangerous climate change – that was the common tone of the staggering number of applications received by ACF for the Climate Project training sessions.

Al Gore announced a visit to Australia to train 75 locals to deliver his presentation, made famous in the documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. And Australians certainly answered the call!

More than 1700 committed and determined people lodged their applications to contribute to stemming the tide of climate change – an overwhelming amount of support with such a small window of opportunity.

The Climate Project team and selection panel were overwhelmed by not only the level of response, but the calibre of applicants. The applicants spanned diverse fields with the process attracting students, teachers, professors, CEO’s, farmers, scientists, doctors, engineers, lawyers, the military and environmentalists . To see such broad sectoral and geographic representation united in the cause was both heartening and inspiring to all at the ACF.

The task ahead to chose just 75 out of the extraordinary pool of willing candidates will be challenging to say the least. There is a clear view though, that although a select few will become climate change leaders, we will encourage all to become advocates within their networks and communities.

Of particular mention were a few applicants that reinforced the merit and validity of the project and brought about a heightened sense of enthusiasm for out climate team.

One young girl of 13 telephoned the offices of ACF. She was concerned about the health of our natural environment and recently spoke in public on the wrongs of shark ‘finning’. She wanted to let the Climate Project team know that she has made tackling the issues of climate change her new cause.

The pledge of support and resources has too been exceptional, with many generous individuals and organisations donating funds, venues, time, skills and access to extended networks for the future successes of the project

We are thankful that all our extended ACF family has contributed their time, resources and advice to help deliver the best possible outcomes – especially given the fast pace of this project!

Due to unprecedented and unexpected numbers we will respond to applicants by Friday the 10th November instead of the prior mentioned date of the 1st, with a strong endeavour to do so as soon as possible.
