ACF and Al Gore train 162 more Australians as climate change messengers

Over 160 people gathered at Melbourne’s Arts Centre recently to be trained as a new generation of climate change messengers. They were all there to be taught how to present Gore's An Inconvenient Truth slideshow to their local communities.

The diverse group included several indigenous women from northern Australia, a bat tracker from the NSW north coast, several high school students and even celebrity gardener Jamie Durie.

There were even a few footballers there, including Shane Wakelin from the Pies and Mark Bolton from the Bombers, plus rugby union star Alex Kanaar.

“The Climate Project program trains volunteers to take the science and the solutions of climate change out into the community and is building momentum around the globe,” says Al Gore. “There are now 1,000 trained presenters working across the USA, hundreds in the UK.”

“Australians face significant risks from global warming, and we are seeing activists throughout the country getting involved in local solutions and in contacting policy makers with their concerns. This is a global crisis requiring global solutions, and The Climate Project is helping inform and engage Australians to take action at home, in workplaces and schools, and places of worship.”

“On July 7 this year millions of people throughout the world watched the Live Earth concerts on television, the internet, or in stadiums around the world. I was so pleased that Sydney hosted one of the major concert venues that opened the 24-hour event.”

“Last November I trained 84 Australians to make the presentation encompassed in the film An Inconvenient Truth. Those 84 have presented over 800 times to more than 60,000 people. The audiences have ranged from senior business leaders to school children, from farmers to city dwellers.

“ACF has built a new web page so communities can request presenters to speak at events and functions. And you can take action in your own life and put yourself on the map at www.whoonearthcares.com - ACF's website that brings together Australians from all walks of life who care about tackling the climate crisis. I urge you to redouble your efforts on this great challenge.”
