2. Fix any dripping taps or leaky toilets
A dripping tap can waste as much as 20,000 litres of water a year and usually means that a washer needs replacing.
Replacing a tap washer is a straightforward process – all you need is a tap spanner and a replacement washer. When you do this, just remember to turn the water off at the mains first.
Just like a dripping tap, a leaky toilet can be a huge waster of water (as well as being costly and extremely annoying). A badly leaking toilet can waste up to 100,000 litres of water and add around $100 to your water bill.
The easiest way to check if a toilet has a slow leak is to place a few drops of food dye in the cistern. If colour appears in the bowl after around 15 minutes without flushing, then you know you have a leak.
