3. Install dual-flush toilets

We already know that the toilet is one of the biggest water users in the house - using on average 40-60,000 litres a year in the average (2-3 person) household. But what you may not know is that, even if your toilet is not leaking, you can easily reduce the amount of water you literally flush down the drain.

If you have a dual-flush toilet, try to always use the half-flush option. An efficient (WELS 4 star) dual-flush toilet uses only 3 litres of water on half-flush (4.5 litres for the full option), much less than an old standard cistern, which uses 11 litres per flush.

Don't despair if you have a single flush toilet, you can still save water. Place a plastic bottle filled with water in the cistern to displace water. This effort will cost you nothing and save you heaps in the long run.

OR you can install a flush regulator-a cheap device you insert in the cistern which allows you to flush for as long as you press the button.
