4. Take a short, efficient shower

Get a water-efficient showerhead: for about $20 and ten minutes of your time, this will easily reduce your household's water use, greenhouse pollution, and the amount of water wasted.

By replacing an old showerhead (that uses between 20 and 30 litres per minute) with a 3 star model (7-9 litres per minute) you can save as much as $100 on your water bill.

Of course, you can quickly reduce your water usage by reducing the time spent in the shower. Try limiting your shower time to four minutes (use a shower timer!). Look at it this way: using a water-efficient showerhead for 15 minutes still uses more water than a 4 minute shower under an old showerhead.

While you’re at it, make sure your taps have low flow aerators fitted. They simply screw on , costs as little as $5 and cut your tap flow in half by mixing in air to maintain pressure. They can by purchased from hardware and plumbing shops.

When you reduce your hot water consumption by installing water efficient shower heads and low flow tap aerators you will save water as well as money on your energy bill. About one kilogram of greenhouse pollution is produced for every 15 litres of water heated by an electric hot water system.
