Money back for saving water

Federal rebates of up to $500 are available under the National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative to help you with the cost of installing rainwater tanks or a greywater treatment system. Please find more information about State level rebates in this article.

Victoria
The Department of Sustainability and Environment offers rebates from $10 to $1000 for purchasing various water-saving devices and services, such as greywater systems, water audits, dual-flush toilets and rainwater tanks. Visit their website or phone 136 186.

New South Wales
Sydney Water is preparing a new rebate form and brochure in line with the changes to the Rainwater Tank Rebate Program that apply from 1 December 2009.

As part of the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund, Sydney Water offers customers a $150 rebate for buying a new washing machine with at least a 4½ star water efficiency rating.

Sydney Water also offer a free DIY water saving kit, which includes aerators and flow regulators to reduce the amount of water coming out of your standard shower, hand basin and kitchen taps. Phone 1800 995 886.

South Australia
SA Water offers rebates from $30 up to $1000 for purchasing water-saving devices such as water efficient shower heads, dual flush toilets, water efficient washing machines, water audits, water-efficient garden products and rainwater tanks. Visit their website or phone 1800 130 952.

Tasmania
Some local councils in Tasmania are offering rebates on a variety of water-saving products. For instance, Hobart City Council offers rebates on:

  • $500 incentive for heat pump water systems
  • Insulation rebate up to $300
  • Installation of rainwater tank for toilet flushing/garden watering: $200-$300

Northern Territory
The Northern Territory Government offers residents in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek rebates up to $50 on water-saving products including 3 star shower heads, garden tap timers, hose trigger nozzles, flow controllers, 4 star dual flush toilets, 4 star washing machines and swimming pool covers.

Rebates up to $500 are also available to residents in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek for plumbing services of rainwater tanks and greywater diversion devices. The plumbing service must be provided by a GreenPlumber to qualify for the rebate. Phone (08) 8951 9209 or visit their website

Western Australia
There are currently no State rebates available. Please check whether you are eligible for Federal rebates instead.

Queensland
There are no State level rebates available. A package of Waterwise resources has been developed for Queensland councils to support community awareness and education about water conservation and water efficiency.

ACT
The ACT Government offers rainwater tank rebates up to $1000 depending on size, but they must have internal plumbing connection to your home (eg to the toilet or washing machine).

They also offer a free GardenSmart service to make your garden more water efficient. Taking part in the service makes you eligible for rebates up to $50 on outdoor water saving products. Free greywater diversion hoses are available to all residents. Visit their website or call 13 22 81.
