Green gold rush

In this time of economic uncertainty, one of the few good news stories is the prospects for the growth of green industry. Strong action on climate change will promote green jobs and green businesses, and help secure economic prosperity.

With the right policy settings, Australia can grow the green economy and secure jobs and industry well into the future.

According to the report Green Gold Rush: How ambitious environmental policy can make Australia a leader in the race for green jobs, Australia could become a leader in certain green industries, but action is needed now.

The report identifies six ‘green collar’ industries with great potential for growth and development:

  • Renewable energy
  • Energy efficiency
  • Sustainable water systems
  • Biomaterials
  • Green buildings
  • Waste and recycling
Australia could generate up to 850,000 green collar jobs by 2030 and multi-billion dollar export opportunities, according to the report by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF).

ACF and ACTU have jointly commissioned this research to explode the myth that strong action on climate change will destroy industries and jobs.

How Australian governments choose to respond to these challenges and opportunities will have a dramatic effect on the profile of Australia’s future workforce.
