Save Australia’s special places!
Date: 31-Oct-2008
Kath & Kim can’t imagine losing their great Aussie backyard. But it’s not just the backyard. Many more of our favourite Aussie places could be lost unless Australia commits to reducing our carbon pollution by at least a third.
A new report from the Australian Conservation Foundation has listed the following icons as under serious threat from climate change including the World Heritage-listed Kakadu wetlands, the Murray-Darling Basin, our wine regions, the Wet Tropics, South-West WA, the Australian Alps, our bush, our beaches and the Great Barrier Reef.
If you think the loss of these special places will have a significant impact on our unique culture, national identity and economy then support your favourite icon at www.whonearthcares.com.
Aussie icons themselves, Kath & Kim are championing the plight of the great Aussie backyard, at risk from rising temperatures, reduced rainfall and increased water restrictions.
Kim is “gropable to think that because of global warming this back garden could soon be a dust bowl”. And as Kath says “I’d go ga-ga if I couldn’t have a bit of P and Q with my maidenhairs in my Zen garden.”
If you feel the same way, you can support your favourite Australian icon at risk by visiting www.whonearthcares.com.
You’re not alone. Other Australians speaking out for their favourite places at risk include actor Michael Caton, cook Stefano de Pieri, ex-Collingwood footballer Shane Wakelin and musician John Butler.
Australia is particularly vulnerable but we still have a window of opportunity to act. We can give our natural icons a fighting chance if Australia commits to cutting our carbon pollution by at least a third by 2020.
