Essendon vs Carlton: AFL Green Round

Check out Essendon and Carlton football clubs going head to head in a GreenHome sustainability challenge in the lead up to the AFL’s Green Round.

The Green Round aims to highlight the impact of climate change on football and help fans and all those involved in the game make a difference in their own lives.

Arch rivals Essendon and Carlton will be going head to head this week, but not on the footy field, in a GreenHome sustainability challenge.

To help mark the inaugural AFL Green Round, players from both teams will be undertaking energy saving actions around their home. The team that performs the best and saves the most greenhouse pollution will take out the prize of sustainability champions, and receive a free home sustainability audit and retrofit to the value of $200.

Fans can follow the players’ progress in the Herald Sun newspaper from Monday 10th to Saturday 14th August, when the winner will be announced.

Players taking the challenge are:

Carlton House
Dennis Armfield
David Ellard

Essendon House
Kyle Reimers
Tyson Slattery
Kade Klemke

Kicking goals with green boots
Carlton’s Eddie Betts and Essendon’s Kyle Reimers will also be doing their bit on the field wearing green footy boots for their Green Round games. Both pairs of boots will be auctioned, with the funds raised going towards community sustainability projects.

Both Essendon and Carlton are kicking goals for the environment beyond the green round, with sustainability initiatives of their own. Read on below to find out more.

In partnership with Visy, the Carlton Football Club has developed an innovative schools program called the Visy Effective Disposals Schools Program. With the help of some of the club’s green ambassadors – including Chris Judd - the program aims to increase primary school students awareness of recycling, water management and energy saving. In 2008, Essendon began work on $3 million worth of projects to transform Windy Hill into a ‘Green Precinct’. The first project off the ranks was the construction of an 800,000 litre water storage system housed underneath the oval surface that will capture 5-8 million litres of water each year for use around the club and, especially, for watering the oval. For more information visit www.essendonfc.com.au.

As part of the Green Precinct project, Essendon also plans to further cut water usage and reduce green house gas emissions via initiatives such as:

  • Printing the club magazine, Bomber, on recycled paper

  • Build monitoring systems through-out the Windy Hill (including smart metering)

  • Refitting of lights and taps throughout Windy Hill

  • Generation of solar and/or wind power

  • Installation of solar hot water services
