Tell the PM it’s time to step up!

Prime Minister Rudd has already said that climate change is one of the biggest issues for our generation – now it's time for him to be a true leader.

The planet needs progress as we head to the crucial Copenhagen negotiations in December.

Australia can help break the deadlock.

Before he jets off to the US for UN climate summit and the G20 meeting click here to ask Kevin Rudd to lead on climate change.

Dear Prime Minister,

Next week, at the UN climate summit and the G20 meetings you will have the chance to show true leadership.

The climate crisis requires global action, this means doing our fair share.

I understand that more than 70 per cent of greenhouse pollution already in the earth’s atmosphere came from wealthy, developed countries.

And yet global studies on the economic impacts of climate change repeatedly show that poorer developing countries will be the hardest hit.

Surely this isn’t fair.

Wealthy nations need to invest AU$187 billion a year - to help poorer countries take a clean development pathway and cope with climate impacts that are already hurting - like rising sea levels and stronger storms.

Australia's fair share would be roughly AU$4.3 billion a year.

Given Australia spends over AU$25 billion a year on defence, and the proposed emissions trading scheme would give over AU$16 billion in free permits to our biggest polluters in its first five years, surely it's worth AU$4 billion a year to find a global solution to the climate crisis!

I urge you to find this money and put a strong funding proposal on the table, on behalf of Australia, while you're in the USA.

You have the potential to help break open the climate deadlock and make real progress on the road to Copenhagen.

Sincerely,

Thanks for your help - we can make a difference.
