International Day of Climate Action: October 24

Across the globe people are calling for strong action on climate change. That's why our friends at 350.org have organised a Global Day of Climate Action on 24th October 2009.

Join over 4200 actions in 170 countries, calling for strong action on climate change at international negotiations in Copenhagen this December.

350.org and the 24th October is all about organising or participating in an event that highlights the number 350. There will be festivals, rallies, bike rides, dinners, photo petitions, music events, kids’ education programs and more. Photos of the events will be assembled into a gigantic, global, visual petition.

Find or create an action of your own
It’s easy! 350.org has created an action map (featured below) on which you can plot your event, or find other events to support on the day. Zoom in to the location of ACF’s head office at the 60L Green Building for example, and you’ll see local actions like:

  • ‘Paul C’ getting 350 tattooed onto his back;
  • Musicians at Coburg Town Hall performing on instruments made from recycled materials;
  • A pedal back to 350 bike ride from the Melbourne museum.
While further afield:
  • There will be a human sign on the steps of the Sydney Opera House;
  • A cabinet meeting held under water in the Maldives; and
  • In Amsterdam, a 1920s Charleston dance class and march.
On the 350.org website, you’ll also find a 9-step organising plan, stacks of action resources, and even an iPhone application.

What is 350?
Although its website is in 14 different languages, the best way to explain 350.org is without words.  Check out the 350.org creative solution to overcoming language barriers.

If you want to know more, it may take you more than 90 seconds, but is worth the effort. 350.org’s “Friends & Allies” page features the logos of more than 200 affiliated organisations.

Where did the number 350 come from?
350 is the number that the world’s leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for greenhouse pollutant gases in our atmosphere - measured in parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

350.org and the Australian Conservation Foundation are working to raise awareness of the need for our political leaders to agree on a global climate agreement that lowers greenhouse pollution below 350 ppm. Read more.

From the Taj Mahal to the Thames, from the Sydney Opera House to the Great Barrier Reef – people will be making a stand.  You can too. Check out your local actions on the map below or go to 350.org's Australian site.
