No room for backward steps on climate change

Australians want strong action on climate change. Time after time, poll after poll, we’re saying the same thing.
This week however, the Liberal Party has announced it wants to weaken Australia’s emissions trading scheme, and thus our response to climate change.
If accepted, these changes would see billions of dollars of extra handouts given to big polluters, and delay Australia’s transition to a clean energy economy.
Let Climate Change Minister Penny Wong know that we will not accept changes that weaken Australia’s response to climate change.
Unless Australia leads by example and works with other countries to secure a strong global climate agreement this December in Copenhagen, climate change will threaten Australian icons like the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian Alps and the Kakadu wetlands.
It’s time for the Government to strengthen and pass the emissions trading scheme to help push for a strong global agreement at Copenhagen negotiations.
