One of the best ways you can help protect our oceans and ocean life is by purchasing sustainably fished seafood products.
Sustainable seafood is sourced within the natural limits of our oceans with minimal damage to ocean life and habitats. At the core of our Sustainable Australian Seafood Assessment Program is a ground-breaking assessment process that has been developed by a team of leading marine scientists. Our seafood map shows you which wild-catch and farmed seafood products are environmentally and sustainable harvested.

Hi
This is a very important initiative. But can you explain how it relates to MSC certified seafood and also where to buy sustainable seafood?
Thanks
I would LOVE to see a fish-tick that I could trust on all the sustainable seafood at the market AND the supermarkets.
Good point. This program provides information about seafood products which is probably more indepth than the MSC program.
This program assesses local small scale wild catch and farmed fisheries, most of who cannot afford the expensive MSC process which assesses big scale fisheries. Due to the strong local focus of this assessment, this program can provide information about whether a seafood product, eg snapper, caught from Port Philip Bay, VIC is sustainable or not. The same fish or seafood species can be sustainable when caught in one area (one region of Australia) while being unsustainable when caught from another area.
A distinction between the two assessments is provided here: http://goodfishbadfish.com.au/?page_id=359
Retailers in fish markets in Australia are required to provide information about the country of origin of the seafood. Some retailers take another step and also specify the region their products come from. You might want to look for any of the species assessed by the ACF program at your local fish market.
Yes, ideally, it would be nice to see all sustainable fish labelled in the market and easily recognisable. But we are not there yet.
