Tas forests signatory working group reports to government

The Tasmanian forests signatory working group today reported to the Tasmanian premier, deputy premier and minister McKim on progress made in their intensive negotiations towards an agreed solution which optimises wood supply and conservation outcomes.

The very significant progress that has been achieved is such that we believe we should now commission the necessary detailed modelling and analysis to provide the conclusive data required to enable finalisation of the negotiations.

The group has a degree of optimism that we can finalise an agreement. The work that we have commissioned now could not have been done until we reached the point that we now have, and it is essential to finalising our negotiations.

The working group is acutely aware of the absolute importance of finalising this work as soon as humanly possible to provide the certainty that we know is essential for industry, workers and the community. This could take up to two weeks, but until this data is received it would be premature to speculate on the final outcome.

The signatory working group is:

  • Don Henry representing Australian Conservation Foundation
  • Jim Adams representing Timber Communities Australia Ltd
  • Jane Calvert representing Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union
  • Dr Hans Drielsma representing Australian Forest Products Association
  • Terry Edwards representing Forest Industries Association of Tasmania
  • Dr Phill Pullinger representing Environment Tasmania Inc
  • Vica Bayley representing Wilderness Society Tasmania Inc
  • Lyndon Schneiders representing Wilderness Society Inc
